There are in total of 38 documented species of Felidae animals on earth so far, which all originated from a common ancestor. 

These species' origin could be traced back to ancient Asia, then gradually spread to other continents. 

In ancient Egyptian culture, cats are respected animals, 

due to the mythology whereas the sun god Ra shapeshifted into a cat to defeat the giant serpent Apophis, 

who had been preventing the sun to rise each day. The imagery of cats killing snakes could be seen on ancient papyruses.
